Kayaking in the fjords. |
 |
We stuffed the equipment in the kayaks and started paddling out from Gudvangen at 7:45 pm the 26th of april. We had planned to paddle to Salthella approximately 12 kilometres further out the Nærøyfjord. It became dark before we arrived the beautiful beach at Salthella. The place was already occupied by others, but we put up our tent beside. The weather was bad, cold and rainy, so we were happy when the tent was up. Kjell made dinner, the menu of the day were pasta. After a long day on the road and in the kayak, it was a good feeling to creep into the sleepingbag. |

| Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord in Sognefjord |
| |
Woke up the next day at eight o'clock. Kjell "the cook" made a nice soup and heated up the tent at the same time. We had a nice breakfast before Kjell tried fishing in the fjord without luck. The weather was still bad, but we wanted to try the kayaks anyway. Paddled out the fjord to Beitelen, where the Nærøyfjord meet the Aurlandsfjord.
We continued across the Nærøyfjord to a quay of stone beside one of many nice waterfalls in the area. After a long break with lunch, we paddled back towards the camp. We saw lot's of animals, the curious seals followed us and a beautiful eagle passed by. We also met a dead deer floating in the water, that's probably what the eagle was watching? Back at the camp, it was time for dinner. Menu of the day were Sausages. After dinner, we relaxed by the fire. Now the sky was clear, this was promising for tomorrow...
...but no, we woke up by the sound of rain. We decided to "wait on weather". While we relaxed in the tent it was rumbling and thundering from the surrounding mountains. It was spring break-up in the Nærøyfjord. At 10:30 hrs, the sun was shining. It seemed to be a nice day anyway. We enjoyed the breakfast in open air, and since we were empty of bread we decided to paddle to Undredal in Aurlandsfjord to take in some supplies.
We used approximately 2.5 hrs to Undredal, where we went ashore. Supplies were bought, and we strolled around the small village as real tourists should do. Went up to Undredal Stavechurch which is the smallest church in the country. Met the Domaas family, which helped me last time I was here. We were invited to eat fish-soup with them the next day, they actually invited half the village (120 inhabitants) for fish-soup. Unfortunately, due to the long distance, we could not stay. On the way back towards the camp, we crossed the fjord several times. First we had a break below the old farm Nedbergo, then across the fjord to Stigen farm where we had a small break beside the quay. Then we rounded Beitelen into the Nærøyfjord, crossed the fjord to the quay of stone and then paddled back to the camp. Menu of the day were "American Casserole" with minced meat and garlic...it tasted terrific!
Next day we woke up at 06:00 hrs and watched the beautiful sunrise. Fell in sleep again and woke up a few hours later to another beautiful sight. At last, the spring had arrived! We had breakfast outside the tent, and relaxed in the sun afterwards. Kjell wanted to try fishing from the kayak, but it's a tough competition since there are 200 seals in the fjord. No fish today either.
I walked to Dyrdal to visit Signe, it's a nice path between Salthella and Dyrdal. Signe was not at home, so I headed towards the valley and up to the farm "Drego" (420 metres above sea-level). This farm is from the year 1617. Safe back at Dyrdal I met Signe and her son Gunnstein, and we had a long talk, with cakes and lemonade, before I headed back to the camp.
Tired and sweaty I teared the clothes off and jumped into the water for a short "swim". Then we crossed the fjord with kayaks to Styvi, where we tried fishing from the quay. Back at the camp at Salthella we had dinner, menu of the day were Fish-soup. This night we slept outside, and woke up several times with beautiful Nærøyfjord in the background, filled with colours from the sunrise.
This was the last day. We had a long breakfast outside, and it dragged on before we started packing the kayaks. It was another beautiful day, and we were not happy leaving the place. But everything has an end, and we soon paddled towards Gudvangen where the car was waiting.
