Skiing in Romsdal

Kirketaket in RomsdalRomsdal is one of the best ski-areas in Norway. Easy access to hundreds of mountains with fjordview. In Romsdal we don't have "ski in ski out" but "ski up ski down". The best way to travel to Romsdal is train from Oslo/Trondheim to Dombås. From Dombås you take the scenic Raumabanen Railway to Åndalsnes at Romsdalsfjord. Now you are at the heart of Romsdal, and short distance to all the good ski-mountains. You can also drive to Åndalsnes down Romsdal Valley, and the nearest airport is Molde with a distance of 50 mkm from Åndalsnes.

Kirketaket, 1439mKirketaket and Kjøvskartind in Isfjorden are two fantastic "Telemark mountains". You start at "Øvre Kavli" (120m). If you're goal is Kirketaket, follow the green line on the picture, crossing the flat Steinberget (981m) before you follow the ridge up to Kirketaket (1439m). To Kjøvskartind (1552m), pass Kavliheia (493m) and continue to Grønnhaugan (649m) before you follow the ridge to the top. You need 4 to 6 hours up for each of them. Fantastic view! From here you can ski down to the fjord, that means 1439m and 1552m vertical drop! See Kirketaket.com for more information.

BlånebbaBlånebba in Isfjorden with fantastic view down to Romsdalen valley and to Trollveggen. You start at Vengedalssetra in Vengedalen. Walk upwards towards Storhesten. Now you have Blånebba to the left and Storhesten to the right. A bit flatter here before it gets steeper again towards the ridge below Blånebba. From here you have view towards Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn, Vengetind, Romsdalen valley and down to Åndalsnes and the fjord. Then follow the ridge towards Blånebba. Ski down the same way as you came up. The skiing down is very good, with long and steep mountainsides. When you reach Storhesten, you can get some extra Telemark turns by walking to the top, then fantastic skiing down to Vengedalssetra (350m).

Around HæstanAround "Hæstan" is a classic skitrip in the Isfjorden mountains. Start at Liabygda (where the Vengedal road starts), steep up towards Øvre Stølen below Lillehesten. Continue upwards, cross Steinelva river and up behind Hestene. Follow Jamnåbotn (800m) towards Vengetindene, a small break is recommended at Kaffekjelbua hut. Nice view between Hestene towards Kirketaket and Kjøvskartind. Behind Storehesten you see the mighty Vengetindene getting bigger as you get closer to the descent down to Vengedalen. If you want some extra Telemark turns you should walk to the top of Storehesten (1023m), fantastic skiing down to Vengedalssetra (350m). Here you can take a short walk up to Vengedalsvatnet lake. View towards Vengetind, Romsdalshorn, Trollwall and Blånebba. The descent continue with funny telemarkskiing in the forest back towards the startingpoint at Liabygda.

Towards Jamnåbotn behind HesteneA steep shortcut, then you avoid crossing the Stein river, can be a risk of avalanche!Towards Vengetind.Break at the foot of Storhesten, Blånebba behind.

Skarven i IsfjordenSkarven in Isfjorden is a nice trip with a fantastic view and funny telemarkskiing down. Start at Øvre Kavli, follow the same path as towards Kirketaket. But instead of turning up to Steinberget, continue straight towards Loftskardsetra (462m). Follow the ridge towards Skarven. At the timberline it is normal to cross into the mountainside and cross upwards to the edge. Then follow the edge towards the top, but remember to walk a bit below the edge due to the possible snowdrift. As mentioned, it is a very good Telemark mountain. Ski down the mountainside first and then follow the ridge down from the timberline and back to Loftskardsetra.

View from HøgnosaÅkesfjellet (or Høgnosa) in Isfjorden is a mountain with view down to Romsdalen and Isfjorden. You start from the skijump/slalom hill in Isfjorden. Powder between january and march, and "summerski" between april and may. Here you can ski from 1215m down to sea-level.

Juratind til høyreJuratind (1712m) between Isfjorden and Eikesdalsvatnet is a popular goal in may, specially on the Ascension Day it might be "crowdy". May is the best time for this skitrip due to avalanche danger earlyer in the winter. You can start either from Grøvdalen in Isfjorden or from Hoemsbu at Eikesdalsvatnet. Easy but long trip, you need rope the last 30 metres to the top. From here you have a fantastic view and a fantastic Telemark run, 1550m vertical drop.  The pictures below are from 7th of may 1999.
