The Sunnmørsalpene Mountains at Sunnmøre in Møre & Romsdal are an endless eldorado of mountains suitable for skiing, climbing and mountaineering. At Sunnmøre there are fantastic skiing conditions and fantastic view down to the fjords, almost regardless of what mountain you choose. From many peaks you can ski from almost 2000 meter and straight down to the fjord. At Stranda at Summøre we also have Strandafjellet Ski Centre with a fantastic view towards the Storfjord and the Sunnmøre Alps.
The Sunnmøre Alps
The Sunnmøre Alps are well known for its good skiing. The mountain ranges are endless, and there are fjord view from most of the mountains. The Norwegian Trekking Association, Ålesund and Sunnmøre, has 14 cabins that can be used both summer and winter (some of the cabins are not recommended in winter because of the danger of avalanche in the area). The Tafjordfjella mountains is a nice area to hike from cabin to cabin. In winter, the ski tracks have been marked and the cabins have been prepared by the Tourist Association.
Below you can see some pictures from a skitrip during springtime at Sunnmørsalpene. The pictures are from a skitrip to Kolåstind (1432 metres above sea level) at Sæbø by the Hjørundfjord.(Photos: Ian Sharp).
Strandafjellet Ski Centre
Strandafjellet Ski Centre is considered one of the best Off-Piste Ski Resorts in Norway. It is recommended to use professional guides when skiing Off-Piste. This is to avoid accidents and avalanches. It is also recommended to use the safe areas of free-skiing, this is downhill runs that are not groomed.
The Ski Centre has seven ski lifts, a separate children's area, terrain park and 17 downhill runs in addition to a great free-skiing skiing area. There are also groomed cross country trails and a great ski-terrain in the area. From the ski centre, located at Stranda, there are breathtaking views of the Storfjord and the Sunnmøre Alps. You can also use the Alpepass, which is a joint ski pass for eight ski resorts in western Norway.
