Litlefjellet in Romsdal – Short and Scenic Ridge Hike

The hike to Litlefjellet in Romsdal is short, but the views along the mountain ridge are impressive. This is an easy and accessible hike that offers a big nature experience in a short amount of time, and a great alternative for those who want to enjoy Romsdal’s dramatic scenery without hiking the full Romsdalseggen Ridge. If you are in the Romsdalsfjord Area area during summer and autumn, Mt Litlefjellet Ridge in the Vengedalen Valley in Isfjorden is a nice mountain hike.

Season, guiding and important safety information

SAFETY & RESPONSIBILITY: Follow the Mountain Code when hiking in Norway. Conditions can change from summer and sunshine to winter and frost within minutes. Always be prepared for rapidly changing weather.

BEFORE YOU GO: Weather and conditions are crucial. Always take this into account before setting out. Avoid the hike in bad weather, fog, thunderstorms, snow or icy conditions. Bring appropriate clothing, good hiking shoes, a map and compass, and enough food and water. Always check the weather forecast before you go.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate. This is a general assessment based on distance, terrain, elevation gain and exposure.

DURATION: 1–2 hours.

ELEVATION: This hike starts at approximately 660 masl (Parking by the road). Highest point at approximately 800 masl (Litlefjellet Mountain Ridge).

SEASON: Mid June to September. These are approximate months and depend on weather, temperature and snow conditions in the mountains.

SUITABILITY: Be aware that the Litlefjellet mountain ridge has steep cliffs on both sides! And parts of the trail up to Litlefjellet have steep sections. If you bring children, always take care of them on the way up and keep them in a safe distance from the steep sections of the trail as it is easy to stumble / fall in these sections. Also keep safe distance from the steep cliffs on both sides of the mountain ridge! Best suited for older children who are used to hiking in the mountains since there are some steep passages with exposed surroundings.

NAVIGATION: We recommend always bringing a map and compass in case of fog.

MOBILE COVERAGE: Mobile coverage is often limited or unstable on many of the hikes described on this website, and in some areas there is no mobile coverage at all. It is recommended to bring an extra power bank for your mobile phone.

The hike to Mt Litlefjellet

The starting point and the trail is marked, and parts of the trail are secured with chains.

Be aware that the Litlefjellet mountain ridge has steep cliffs on both sides! And parts of the trail up to Litlefjellet have steep sections. Pay special attention to this if it has rained and the trail and mountains are wet and slippery.

Mt Litlefjellet is a mountain ridge between Mt Romsdalshorn and Mt Blånebba. This is a short hike with a fantastic view over the Romsdal mountains like the Troll Wall (Trollveggen), Romsdalshorn, Vengetind and Blånebba. You also see down to the Romsdalen Valley and to Åndalsnes and the Romsdalsfjord.

The hike up to the ridge takes around 30 minutes, and is a shorter alternative to the Romsdalseggen Hike.

Vengedalen Valley in Isfjorden

You start the hike to Litlefjellet from the Vengedalen Valley in Isfjorden, the same valley as where the Romsdalseggen Hike starts.

Continue driving further up the valley, pass Lake Vengedalsvatnet and drive towards Mt Romsdalshorn.

You can see the Litlefjellet Ridge on the right side, and you can also se the trail on the hillside. The starting point is signposted, and there is also room for a few cars near where the trail starts.
