Isfjorden in Romsdal

Isfjorden is a village at the innermost part of the Romsdalsfjord, close to Åndalsnes in Møre og Romsdal county. The place is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Easy arrivals to the surrounding valleys and mountains; Randonnée- and telemark-skiing, hiking, mountaineering and climbing.

Some of Norways most famous mountains are located in Isfjorden and nearby: Romsdalshorn, Trollveggen, Vengetind, Blånebba, Juratind, Kirketaket and Torshammaren are some of them.  The Romsdalseggen hike is one of Norway´s most scenic hikes. The fjord also invites to activities; swimming, sea kayaking and fishing trips in idyllic surroundings. The rivers Isa and Glutra are great rivers for fishing salmon and trout.

Woldstad Gard farm restaurant in Isfjorden offers a good dining experience. Woldstad Gard can deliver catering of your choice, or you can be welcomed in the farm restaurant by appointment. The Mountains – Popular Hiking Goals

The mountains in Isfjorden and Romsdal are made for adventurous people. Here you have challenges for all kind of levels. Climbers, hikers and families with children can explore the Romsdal Alps. A short easy hike to be highly recommended is to Litlefjellet in Vengedalen. The hike takes 30 minutes, and the reward is a fantastic view. Lay down on the ground, and you can see the surrounding mountains; Trollveggen, Vengetind, Blånebba and Romsdalshorn at the same time. Here you can read about some of the easy hikes.

Mt. Litlefjellet

Drive to Liabygda in Isfjorden, from where you drive 7 kilometer along the tollroad to the Vengedalen Valley. Continue driving further up the valley, pass Lake Vengedalsvatnet and drive towards the base of Mt. Romsdalshorn. You now see the Litlefjellet Ridge on the right side, and you can also se the trail on the hillside. 30 minutes hike up to Litlefjellet, a mountain ridge between 660m – 790 m.a.s. Fantastic view down to the Romsdalen Valley and the surrounding mountains; Mt. Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn, Vengetind and Blånebba. Kavliheian Mountain Pasture

Drive east from the center of Isfjorden, approximately 2.5 kilometre to Øvre Kavli. From there, around 3 kilometer (tollroad) to parking place at the end of the road. From the parking place you have a great view towards the Romsdalsfjord and Åndalsnes. Between one and two kilometres easy hike to the mountain pasture at Kavliheian. Grøvdalsbakken and Lake Bakkevatnet

Drive east to the inner part of Grøvdal. Start at Stølen where the road ends in Søredalen in Grøvdalen. Follow a nice path in the forest and cross the suspension bridge over the river before the path gets steeper upwards Loftdalen. You need approximately 2 hours to reach the small cabin by Lake Bakkevatnet. The path continue to Øvste Bakkevatnet 861m. Another hut here. Fishing for trout can be done in these lakes, contact Hen Fjellstyre.

Romsdalseggen Mountain Ridge

Romsdalseggen in Romsdal has in short time become one of the most popular hikes in Norway. The hike starts in the Vengedalen Valley in Isfjorden and ends in the city center of Åndalsnes. The Skiing – Alpine Ski Touring

Mt. Kirketaket (1439m)

Kirketaket is a fantastic mountain for alpine ski touring with fjord view. You start at the Shooting Range in Isfjorden, follow the ski track up to Stormyra. Cross Stormyra and continue to the left towards Bruhaugen, a popular goal for families with children. Continue through the forest, and follow a small forest path towards Skarsetra. Just before you arrive Skarsetra, take up to the right to Mt. Steinberget. Here, it is steep and heavy, but easy to cross upwards. Cross the flat Steinberget (981m) before you follow the ridge up to Kirketaket (1439m). You need 4 to 6 hours up to the summit from where it is a fantastic view towards the Romsdalsfjord and the surrounding mountains. Read more about Kirketaket here…

Mt. Blånebba (1320m)

Start the parking at Vengedalssetra in vengedalen, same starting point as the Romsdalseggen Hike. Follow the same route as the Romsdalseggen Hike to the mountain ridge, where you have a great view down to the Romsdalen Valley and the surrounding mountains. Ski uphill, east towards Mt. Blånebba. The last 100 meters can be demanding depending on the snow conditions, take care. We recommend to ski down the same route as described when skiing upwards.

Isfjorden is surrounded by great ski-touring-mountains, and all the mountains have fjord view. We also recommend skiing to Mt. Kjøvskardtind, Skarven and Galtåtind. In Isfjorden and Romsdal, Guided Tours are recommended.

Romsdal – The Neighbourhood

Isfjorden and Åndalsnes in Romsdal are situated between Trollstigen, Trollveggen, the Raumabanen Railway and the Romsdalseggen Ridge. Geiranger and the Geirangerfjord are well known places nearby. If you go westwards, you have the Atlantic Coast with the Atlantic Road, Ona Island with Ona Lighthouse, Bjørnsund and Midsundtrappene. Go North-East, and you will find the beautiful Eikesdal and the Mardalsfossen Waterfall, Aursjøvegen Mountainroad, and Litjdalen Valley. The cities of Ålesund, Molde and Kristiansund are nearby. Travel information:

You can reach Isfjorden by car, 6 hours from Oslo or 4 hours from Trondheim. By train to the end-station Åndalsnes at one of Norways most spectacular railways Raumabanen, then you can see Isfjorden from the railway station. The nearest airport is in Molde, then one hour by bus to Isfjorden.
