PREIKESTOLEN BY THE LYSEFJORD

Mt Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) in Ryfylke is one of Norway´s National Hiking Trails, and the view towards the Lysefjord is epic. Map to use: Lysefjorden 1:50000.

Mt Preikestolen is a mountain plateau raging 604 meters above the Lysefjord. The four kilometer long hike and 330 meter climb takes about two to three hours one way.

GRADING – Medium. ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE – This hike starts at approximately 275 masl (Parking by Preikestolen Mountain Lodge). Highest point at approximately 604 masl (Preikestolen Mountain Plateau).

GUIDE – We recommend you to join a Guided Tour to Preikestolen.

SEASON – Mid June to mid September, these are approximate dates that depends on the weather, temperature and the amount of snow in the mountains.

SAFETY IN THE MOUNTAINS – You should follow the Norwegian Mountain Code when hiking in Norway. It can change from summer and sunny weather to winter and frost in minutes! Always check the Weather Forecast before you go hiking. For safety reasons it is recommended to avoid hiking in Thunderstorms, in fog, in bad weather and when it is snow and ice on the trail and in the mountain! Always bring good clothes and hiking shoes. And have enough food and water in your rucksack.

NOTE – This hike is not suitable for children! There are several steep, narrow and exposed sections on this hike, especially just before and on Preikestolen itself.

The hike to Mt Preikestolen starts from Preikestolen Mountain Lodge and there is a marked trail to the summit.

The four kilometer long hike and 330 meter climb takes about two to three hours one way.

Mt Preikestolen is a popular goal for both Norwegians and foreign tourists. In the high season, it can be crowded on the flat plateau that measures only 25 times 25 meters and with three of the edges going vertically straight down into the Lysefjord.

The hike back from Preikestolen is on the same scenic trail as you came.

NOTE – Be careful not to go near the edges of the vertical cliffs!
